We went to UMU for a b'day celebration. Two of us. The evening started very well, with the staff attentive, the service efficient and the advice from the sommelier considered.

The atmosphere is fairly average for such an upmarket restaurant with some reasonably poor MDF cutouts with mirrors and the like (though the enterance is impressive and the toilets are easily the best designed part of the restaurant).

Having ordered the UMU special Kaiseki service and having confirmed that in the choices we really didn't want any caviar we thought we were set for a wonderful evening.

Service for the first 30 minutes or so was briliiant and everything we ecpected. And then the first course arrived, complete with a caviar topping and it went downhill from there. The staff seemed to disappear into the woodwork and 20 minute waits between courses (especially when you have 10 of them to go through) is not something that one appreciates. Combine that with multiple courses suddenly appearing together and the result was less than fantastic.

The drinks service moved from us having our glasses refilled almost every sip to waiting 45 minutes for a glass of sake to be refilled (from a bottle we paid for but then never managed to find again).

Really chaps, when you get presented with a bill for £400 for two people, you really do expect more - a lot more!
