Pierre Victoire

I can't really see the point in this restaurant. If you want cheap but decent grub with a joyful atmosphere, you can go to Bistro 1 or Cafe Emm round the corner. Or if you want more sophisticated food and a classier atmosphere, there are plenty of alternatives to choose from. Based on a recent Saturday evening trip to Pierre Victoire, however, this doesn't really deliver either. It was inexpensive (two course £8.90 / £14.90 - depending on supplements for certain dishes - pre-7pm set menu), the food was OK, the service efficient, the atmosphere joyless. My herring starter tasted like it was tipped straight out of a tin, with an overpowering sauce and nasty blinis that would have made it a trial to finish, while steak-frites was OK. That sums it up; at its best it's OK. Or another way to sum it up: It still feels like a chain, even though it isn't one anymore. Or, to truly damn it with the faintest praise, it's like a poor man's Cafe Rouge (but literally so, as it's not as expensive). But the price shouldn't be an excuse.
