Petrus

I visited Petrus along with two friends for lunch. We'd booked a table for 2pm, and had a delightful afternoon.

We had a drink in the bar area with canapes. Wonderful foie gras!

We decided to selected from the £60 lunch menu - there were three menus to choose from, an £80 tasting menu (for the whole table) and a cheaper set meal with a couple of choices for each course.

What impressed me about the menu is that it didn't try too hard. There was a wide choice for all types of palate. My saltmarsh lamb main was particularly memorable.

We eventually left at 5.45. We weren't rushed, and the service and food were excellent.

I hesitate to say 10/10 - I haven't tried everywhere yet - but it was close.

Canteen (Spitalfields)

Visted Canteen for a late breakfast. It was a Monday, so it was empty and we had the place to ourselves.

We sat in front of the kitchen, as they prepared for lunch service, and had a dish of bacon, eggs and bubble'n'squeak.

It was fine - my wife's eggs were overdone, but the bacon was good and we enjoyed it. But we also had a great breakfast at the greasy spoon in Borough Market at half the price, and twice the portion.

I'd like to pay a visit for lunch or dinner. The kitchen seems to take care to make sure the staff try the specials (which sounded delicious) - so the attention to detail looks like it is there.

Smiths of Smithfield

I had a great meal in the Dinning Room at Smiths. It was a Friday lunchtime, so the market special was fish and chips. At £11, it was good value, and my only criticism, it came rather quickly, and I had had only just tasted the wine!!

It's a lovely atmosphere. The downstairs bar was buzzing.

Good food, good service and a good time. Liked it alot.

Locanda Locatelli

I was making my second visit to Locandas, and on both occasions I've been mightly impressed. Still can't quite make my mind up if the food is better at Zafferanos, but for atmosphere and a true sense of occasion, I do love Locandas.

I started with a fabulous gnochi special - ahhhh! I'm salivating thinking about it.

My main was Dexter Beef. It was really tasty. Perhaps not as tender as I expected, but it was good.

I finished with Pannacotta. An old favourite, but a trusted friend.

I don't think you'd be disappointed by a visit to Locandas - highly recommended.
