500 Restaurant

Went to 500 for the first time on Friday, and we were impressed. Both pasta dishes were a success, as was a main course of rabbit. Friendly service. This corner of London is short of good restaurants, and this one deserves to do well.

Shampers

I've been going to Shampers on occasion for around 10 years now, on the basis that it offers good food and a really good wine list at sensible prices in a central London location. Moreover the staff are very friendly. Not much more I need to say: it deserves to thrive for at least another 10 years.

maze

Superb experience at a great restaurant. We went to Maze after our wedding, and had the 7 course Tasting Menu. The food was simply excellent, there's a very comprehensive wine list (and the cocktails are pretty damn good), and the staff were absolutely amazing. The service was in fact incredible. The entire evening was a complete pleasure and will be remembered for a very long time by all of us. And to meet Jason Atherton and Gordon Ramsay was the icing on the cake. Highly recommended. We hope to be back very soon.

Bar Gansa

I wouldn't be as effusive about Bar Gansa as the reviewer below, but certainly it offers good, hearty, well-cooked day-to-day tapas (if you want more slightly more adventurous stuff then go to El Parador, which is really very good). Great laid-back atmosphere close to the teeming hordes of Camden Market, and charming service. We'll be back.

The Prince Albert

One or two small glitches, but this place is well worth going back to. Starters were all regarded as very good (though the foie gras which should have been part of one of them arrived separately a couple of minutes later on a plate, still at least they remembered), and mains were enjoyed. One criticism: charging £14 or £15 for 4 scallops with a bit of spinach really is miserly. Otherwise, good cooking, very good service, extremely pleasant atmosphere in the dining room upstairs.

Bleeding Heart (Tavern)

Went to the Tavern last night and won't return. The best days at this restaurant are well behind it, as recent visits to the Bistro and the Restaurant have also disappointed. The starters we tried were edible but pretty mediocre, but two of the main courses couldn't be finished, and the third was simply passable. Wine list is pretty conservative, borderline uninspiring. On the plus side the atmosphere is pleasant enough. Service average.

Medcalf

Ate at Medcalf last night, and have been surprised by previous comments regarding the service and the quality of the meat. The service couldn't have been friendlier or more efficient, and both the devilled kidneys and the lamb were very good. Slightly restricted options for wine by the glass, but the Cabernet Sauvignon on offer was great. Prices are also extremely reasonable. I would certainly eat here again.

The Cork & Bottle

A good venue for a glass of wine in the tourist hell of Leicester Square: great wine list, cosy atmosphere. However, I disagree with previous reviews concerning the general standard of the food: it's OK, but there are much better wine bars for food in central London. The grilled prawns were served on top of a salad that was obliterated by a tasteless dressing. Pointing this out to the waitress (in a very polite way) was met with silence. I've visited the C and B for a number of years for the wine, and will continue to do so, but wouldn't rush back for the food.
