Bistrot Bruno Loubet

Enjoyed a lovely dinner here and I'd go back again. Friendly service, tasty food, comfortable seating.

Portal Restaurant & Bar

Great styling and a nice place to sit. That's the only good thing about Portal. The food was unenjoyable - super salty, strange combinations and overpriced. Grilled fish tasted not like it had actually been put on the grill, but more like the way your hair tends to smell after a backyard BBQ. Bleh. Cheeses were mini sized - looked half the dimensions of a normal wheel/block of cheese anywhere else. Overpriced nonsense gets a thumbs down.

The Alma (Wandsworth)

Really pleasantly surprised - had a delicious meal here. Friendly service, buzzy atmosphere. Good food and a good pub - hooray!

Bodean's (Clapham)

Thumbs up for the pulled pork sandwich. Ribs were pretty tasty, good idea having paper towels on the table since yeah, the service isn't awesome. Have been a few times and always thought it was tasty.

Saki Bar & Food Emporium

I might as well set up a direct debit, that way I can feel the money being sucked out of my account as I eat each morsel. That being said, you do get what you pay for. It's not the place to go when you're starving for lunch and hankering for sushi (at least not on my salary). It is the place for some seriously good eats, though. A must try for sushi lovers. Probably the only sushi place in London with an Italian maitre'd (who is lovely!)

Galvin La Chapelle

Service was so snarky. Unwelcoming, even hostile. Akin to an airline dinner, not to mention we were seated next to a table of people who had added chairs on the ends so they were pretty much a part of our dinner. Glad to hear they were able to sort out their court case and that one guy's divorce, though.

Food was dull. The lack of service and atmosphere kicked the evening to the can. Skip it unless you know the bosses are in that night so you can get a proper experience.

Enjoyed a nice French meal here. Good steak frites, tasty fish. Thumbs up for their wine list. Has a nice-sized bar adjacent to the dining room. Would have been pricey without the 50% off deal.

Gazette (Battersea)

Went on the premise of the offer, but caved for foie instead... The atmosphere inside is cute but we had a seriously warped tabletop. The physical location is super awkward, too. Strange. The food was ok, had chicken which was blah. Really didn't enjoy that everything was served in rustic-looking/shabby plastic cooking pots, though. I get the concept, but it was like playing restaurant with a kid's kitchen set - not to mention eating salad out of a saucepan is a bit like drinking booze from a mug. Tasted ok, service decent, but between awkward pots and location, I can't say a return visit is on the top of my list.

Ace Fusion

Having tried a bunch of the neighboring restaurants, Ace Fusion is a good one. The service was friendly, though on Caribbean time - not super fast, but we weren't in a rush. Jerk chicken was nice - spicy with a nice flavor. The hot wasn't mindblowingly spicy which was was a pleasant surprise. Cute atmosphere, but several tables are under a loft-type thing so maybe mention if you're booking and are quite tall! They seem to do a good takeaway business, too. Ace Fusion will be going in the local restaurant rotation.

Had the chicken mooli for lunch. Flavorful chicken (maybe a little salty but that's not the worst thing), crunchy apple and fresh mint. The wrap, which I understand they have worked hard to develop, was seriously delicious. Good lunch deal: mooli + papadoms/tomato chutney + drink for a fiver. Well worth the wander into Soho.

Not so keen on the little bicycle seat-style bar stools, though. Kinda small to sit on, but it's probably the only way to accomodate many people in the small shop.

Artisan & Vine

Service was fine. Food was below average. Overall pretty disappointing.

There are other places in the same area that are doing remarkably better for the same price, nicer atmosphere. Skip this and go somewhere else.

Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons

Never before and probably never again will I have the luxury to spend 5 hours eating lunch. Wow, wow and wow.

Though not the most stellar tasting menu I've had in London (okay, near London) the whole experience was really pleasant in that country-meets-city people sort of way. Eating there was like being outside on a gorgeously sunny early summer's day - for the afternoon, everything is going your way

Though I don't have any, I was glad to see it's child-friendly. If they can behave well (as the kids who were there did), I don't see any reason why kids can't join in on good food.

Moti Mahal

Had to plan a last minute meal and picked Moti Mahal thanks to the meal deal.

Though we booked for 4 people, we ended up being a group of 7 (oh, students). Felt a little out of place at first (wearing jeans and t-shirts, other diners looked like they had chosen this restaurant for a slightly more special meal), but everything turned out alright and the service accommodated nicely.

Two gripes- first, upon arrival there wasn't any sign with the restaurant name inside the restaurant. Since we weren't dressed up, and we walked into a room with tables chock full of glassware and a hostess asking if she could take our coats, we stood there nervously, wondering if we had walked into the wrong restaurant. Had to check the stack of business cards next to the register to make sure!

Second, the heat lamps in the kitchen go on and off, changing the lighting in the restaurant (especially as we were seated near the kitchen window). Got really annoying after the fifth or sixth time. Bright or dim... decide!

Was a decent night; glad I got the pre-dinner deal otherwise I would've been disappointed.

If you've ever watched Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, you'll see his formula of simple, well prepared, dishes of seasonal ingredients at work here. Interesting take on what I guess is French tapas - ordering several small dishes, many of which are really tasty! However, don't go trying to sell me a mini BLT by jazzing it up with fancy words. "Bacon and onion cream, chilled lettuce velouté, tomato gelée". Let's be honest: it's bacon, lettuce and tomato. I see right through that.

Black & Blue Steakhouse (Wigmore St)

Decent burger, good chips. Good lunch place if walking around town with a colleague or out of town visitors thanks to comfortable booths and pleasing decor.

London is a city of many luxuries- spas, shopping, luxury accommodations... but none compare to the luxury of Aubergine's tasting menu and matching wines.

If you're not up for several (read: many) glasses of wine with the pairings, try half-bottles. The (genius) sommelier always recommends stunning wines that are completely unlike anything you've ever tasted before, guaranteed to surprise your taste buds.

Bring a hearty appetite - like any tasting menu, the dishes appear small but catch up to your stomach by the end. Sometimes I wish the dishes arrived in a different order. Though just as delicious, I often feel too stuffed to appreciate the final meatier dishes as much as the first ones.

Basically, though Aubergine is fabulous. Totally the place to take someone you really care about.

The Chutney

Been to The Chutney several times. Consistently good, though lately it's been extra tasty. The chicken biryani is delicious. Very friendly service, recognize their locals even if you're only stopping in for some takeaway. The only gripe is that I wish they were open for lunch because I'd eat there then, too!
