Cafe Mode (Endell St)

I like Cafe Mode, its one of those few places to eat in London that I and a friend have been to more than once, I think its becuase its one of the few places in London I have eaten where the staff bother to make you feel at home. There is no Rose wine on the menu, but they always manage to come up with a bottle of Rose D'anjou. Pizza's and Pastas sre fine, but the lamb chops are to die for hmmmm. Like other reviewers have said the owner is generous and always seems to offer a farewell tipple on the house - bravo sir ! I'm not sure its big enough for parties over 4, but for a one to one over a candlelite Pizza/Pasta there is nowhere else in London xxx

Cottons (Islington)

I went as part of a party of 8 (me male and 7 female work colleagues), 3 of which were of caribbean decent and perhaps a tad more critical of the food - nothings as good as what mamma used to make right :-) Anyway this review is how I felt about my experiance at Cottons as part of the group. Booked for 7pm on Friday night at arrived just before 6pm giving ample time to get in some 'happy hour' cocktails at the bar. I settled for the beer, being diabetic I find most cocktails a little too sweet. But the rest of my party were mixed on the quality of the cocktails. My only critic was that they seemed to take forever to make, but were brought to the bar table which was great. We sat down at 7pm to have our meal. I could not understand the fuss by the staff about having to have the set menu for such a small party (I can understand at Xmas or something but not on a bog standard Friday night in May) the waitress relented and 'allowed' one of us to have a whole meal, and another a soup off the La Carte menu. I had the salt fish dumpling starter, and curried goat (with rice n peas) main and thought it absolutely supperb, others were not so happy. My desert got forgotten by the waitress and only one other had desert which they did not eat. Then there was a bit of a mix up with the bill as our deposit was not taken off and we were charged for my desert that never materialised. But staff were prompt and polite about rectifying this. I should add that I like reggae music and some great oldy classics were played throught the evening. After the meal we went downstairs to the club area but it was a bit too crowded for our liking so we departed to a nearby pub.

So to summarise: Nice reasonably priced food and drink, friendly service, great music, but possibly some staff training required and lighten up on the set meal/le carte menu thing - I would go again (other in my party said they would not)
