Interesting! We had great expectations of this restaurant and finding ourselves at a loose end booked a 6pm table on Saturday evening. A good booking experience, good welcome, great guy took our drinks order. Waitress came for our order and we asked for some help on wine. This was dismal for a restaurant of this calibre. As a long sighted person it's hard enought to read a menu so the helpful waitress pointed out a wine. I couldn't read it so asked which grape variety it was. She had no idea and it was only when I managed to read the word 'Rhone' I was able to work it out. She had no idea and judging by the bottles of wine on other tables, this was clearly the one they needed to sell.
Starter was excellent. Main course could have been excellent if my fish had not been cold in the thickest part. I spoke to a waiter who dealt with it professionaly but my dining partner was left to carry on with his main course while I waited for the proper cooking of my main course. There were a few things which on their own would not have been important for example, no one took our jackets, no one poured our wine, when I mentioned that the table needed pushing towards me the staff ignored it and we did the manoeuvre ourselves.
Shame really. It just felt as if people dining at 6pm aren't quite as important as those dining at 8pm. We are all choosing from the same menu and paying the same price so what's the problem?
As I left the restaurant and was asked my opinion I said 'ordinary'. How disappointing. Have I had better value for money? Absolutely. Would I go back? Given the opinion of others and the quality of the majority of the meal, yes. But please understand that pre-theatre doesn't suggest that people are satisfied with mediocrity.
We went on to a bar where the service was outstanding even if we might only have been spending a fraction of the price. Arbutus - please look and learn!
