The Ambassador
Four of us ate at the Ambassador on 13 February 2010, having picked it from other restaurants in the area based on the overall rating on London Eating (9). We were disappointed - it did not life up to the rating.
Menu on their website was not what was on offer - actual menu was less appealing - they said they hadn't got round to updating the website.
Service was pleasant and friendly but slow. It got to the point between each course when I was just about to ask where the food was, when it appeared.
Starters were OK (caesar salad, celeriac soup, scallops & black pudding). We all had the spiced lamb with couscous as our mains. The lamb was cooked well, still nicely pink, and tender, and well flavoured. The couscous was on a small bed of spinach, with dates mixed in. Although nicely flavoured, both the couscous and the spinach were cold and when we pointed this out we were told that it was supposed to be cold. There was a trace of jus with the lamb, could definitely have done with more. Blueberry & vanilla ice-cream OK, berry cheesecake with toasted almonds was more like a vanilla torte. Chocolate & orange mousse didn't appear to have any orange in it just a few bits of peel on the top.
Total bill, including one bottle of wine, £144.
