Le Vacherin

We booked at Le Vacherin for a special occasion based on the rave reviews. We were disappointed. This was partly because the atmosphere was not what we expected - it is your typical "bistro" feel, so noisy, a bit hurried, definitely not one for a special occasion. The food is bistro style too so all your old classics, and they were well executed and traditionally french (I am french myself) - but this level of cooking would be available for £15 for 3 courses in France whilst at Le Vacherin you are looking at at least £45 per person and that can't be justified for this kind of food. On a positive note the chocolate mousse was the best I've had and delicious.

We had such a disappointing time at this restaurant last night. I was confident we would have a tasty meal as curry is usually a safe bet and Mela pops up in a lot of the guides. We waited ages for our menus, once we ordered the food came worryingly quickly (5 mins). We just ordered mains and were really disappointed not to be brought popadoms which you always expect in curry places - especially as Mela is expensive. £12 for curries, £3 for rice - more than the going rate even in central london. My main of lamb and spinach was nice (smaller than average portions) but my two dining companions had chicken dishes and both were actively bad - one's sauce tasted just like alphabet spaghetti. We only got 1 of the 2 naans we ordered though they tried to charge us for both.

Finally it was very noisy in there, which combined with charmless service meant there wasn't much of an atmosphere.

I really wouldn't recommend this place in an area with so many options.
