Cafe Pacifico

I used to love this restaurant, but was disappointed with the quality of the food on my recent visit. I ordered a vegetarian enchilada and was given a chicken one. (I realise mistakes happen.) I decided to continue eating it, but it was extremely dry and bland. The enchiladas I buy at Sainsbury's are actually much tastier.

Otherwise, the atmosphere is still great/buzzy (if a bit noisy), the waiters were very friendly/attentive, and the food arrived quickly despite the place being full. I will have to think about coming back, though, because there are increasing choices for Mexican food (my favourite -- I'm from California).

Jamie's Italian (Covent Garden)

I've simply had my best Italian food in London here (despite Jamie not being Italian) -- it was delicious. The menu is unique and contains a lot of carefully-crafted choices.

The service was friendly, and the atmosphere (downstairs especially) quite pleasant. The prices are only slightly above the average Italian restaurant in the area. Tipping is at your discretion. Beware that this restaurant doesn't take bookings and is very crowded, so you might have to wait to get a table.

I'm surprised by the many poor reviews, as I've dined at Sarastro many times over the years and have had nothing but friendly service. The food quality has improved from mediocre to quite good (for a medium-priced restaurant) as of Spring 2011, when there was evidently a revamp of the menu/kitchen/chefs. My only complaint is that for some dishes potatoes don't come with it. And baklava is no longer available for dessert.

But the best thing about the place is the fabulous decor -- the atmosphere is so unique you just have to see it! This makes it one of London's most special venues.

Red Onion

This restaurant is a hidden gem. Romantic atmosphere (because of the exotic lamps), friendly service, wide menu, delicious food, and reasonable prices. And it's neither too full or too empty.

The only negative is that like at most restaurants, they tend to forget to bring the requested tap water until being reminded (they don't mind doing so though).

Da Paolo

This restaurant may be a hidden gem, but it's local to me. I've taken relatives here several times (last in March '06) and we very much enjoyed the food, house wine, service, and cozy authentic-Italian atmosphere. Not necessarily the very cheapest but good value. In fact it's of my two favourite Italian restaurants in London.

Papageno Restaurant

I had a great Friday evening here with a large group. The decor (along with sister restaurant SARASTRO) is my favourite in London -- fabulously flamboyant, absolutely unique. And to my pleasant surprise, the service was unbeatably friendly, attentative, and we were never rushed. My salmon meal was just fine and more than enough food. The set course menu cost was reasonable.

I look forward to coming back -- especially for special occasions, parties, or whenever I want a fun, special environment in what's already a buzzing part of town.
