La Rueda (Kings Road)

Come here for a busy lunch or a relaxing evening and La Rueda won't disappoint. The food is lovely, the service is very friendly and attentive. It's been such a nice place, both my friends and myself went to visit it twice in the same day (lunch and dinner).

It's perfect for bringing in friends and family but do keep a check on time, we usually spend 3 or 4 hours there without realising so don't come looking for a quick meal.

The only down side is the wine list, which is in need of a change as it is rather average. The ones I have tried so far seems far from a good match with the lovely food.

Kai Mayfair

Kai is no ordinary Chinese restaurant. Unlike many restaurants that serve the same menu for the past 30 years, Kai enjoys introducing new ideas to their menu. Many restaurants have tried and failed as they don't know how to balance the taste to suit most customers but instead go for a trial and error, which usually goes very wrong. Kai, however, knows very well what they are doing.

You don't go to this restaurant for a typical meal and the price of meals are on the high side, but the food and experience is worth the price. You also need to consider the area, you don't pop into Mayfair and expect a bargain. The wine list as usual is superb and staff are friendly and attentive.

Whether you go there for a solo meal or a party, Kai has never gone wrong. They know how to treat the visit. Great stuff!

Peninsula Chinese Restaurant

I visit Peninsula once in a while, usually with a Chinese friend, who also can't help but comment on the average food and poor service. There aren't many Chinese restaurants to choose from in the area and Peninsula is one of them that happens to be passable.

Many people have comment on brilliant dim-sum and evening meals but I have yet to see it from Peninsula. I get recommended to visit Peninsula often by Chinese friends and have only been disappointed on each visit. You get the lovely atmosphere during the weekends but that applies to most Chinese restaurants.

I guess I will be visiting Peninsula again when I get recommended to go there but I now go there with little expectations, in hope that they can prove me wrong.

Lotus Room

Lotus Room has not been on the best in both food and service during the past 2 years. The popularity of the restaurant has dipped sharply since my last review.

Food has improved greatly over the past month compared to previous visits but the constant change in staff (who still have little to no knowledge of service along with poor English and inability to open wine) and the rather empty restaurants on most days has affected what was once a fantastic restaurant quite badly. The non-existant atmosphere isn't helped by the poor choice of music on many occasions, sometimes there is no music at all. The only service you do get is when the manager goes around talking to customers, usually regulars.

The food and price is good for this region but until the service is improved, it's hard to recommend this restaurant. House wine has been changed and isn't great, you need to pay that bit more to get a decent wine. Desserts however are fantastic as usual.

Imperial City

The return of Imperial City! It was fantastic when I last reviewed the restaurant but the food quality deterioriated over the past 2 or so years. Rumours were that the old head chef who left has returned, as an old regular, I had to give it a try again. One word sums it up: Brilliant!

The food is pricey as usual but those who eat at this restaurant don't consider it to be an issue. It's the food and atmosphere that counts and it comes to no surprise that this restaurant is packed on a daily basis (closed weekends). It's a shame that the service hasn't improved much.

Peninsula Chinese Restaurant

I've made three visits so far, based on recommendation and popularity. Two visits during lunch time and one during the evening. On all three occasions, I've received little to no service. I enjoy slow relaxing meals in the evening but with drinks served slower than meals with reminders being issued on several occasions questions whether service exists in this popular restaurant. Waiters are inattentive and the only thing I find fast about their service is the production of the bill for your meal.

The food quality is passable but nothing exciting. Dim sum during lunch is rushed (both on a busy Sunday and on a quiet weekday). Some are well prepared, some are badly done. Some of the more luxurious foods such as seafood are below-par during a reasonably quiet evening. The wine selection is pretty good but spoilt by the food that accompanies it.

It has been a disappointing experience so far with Peninsula, perhaps I had my hopes too high. If you are looking for an average meal, Peninsula will pass, but expect too much and you won't be pleased.
