We had an interesting experience over lunch at Maze yesterday.
We all chose the chef's menu - 4 courses for £28.50, and whilst we initially thought the small portions would not fill us up, we were pleasantly surprised. Presentation was excellent and the food top notch.
Pity about the service. After finishing our coffees we were asked/told to move to the bar area - which appeared to be a blatant attempt to get us to spend more cash. The restaurant was near empty, so it's unlikely they needed our table for the next sitting.....
When we got the bill - there were 4 additional items on it that did not belong to us. Whether this place is not accustomed to people checking their bills, we're not sure, but they certainly didn't bend over backwards to apologise for the mistake.
Fortunately the items were removed and we set about splitting our bill. After a slight calculation error on our part, we asked the waiter how he had come to that figure - his snotty reply of 'I did use a calculator' pretty much summed up the attitude of a lot of the staff there.
Places that automatically add a service charge to their bills should at least train their staff to try to make an effort to earn it. We are seriously regretting having paid the unneccessary 12.5%, and despite the lovely food we left with a very bitter taste in our mouths.
