W1 Restaurant at The Cumberland
A pleasant space, with impressive chandeliers, but a slightly soulless feel. The service was fine and the morsels we were given to eat tasted good. But that was the trouble: morsels. The portions were absurdly, almost insultingly, small.

Denise's Restaurant
On the strength of these reviews, four of us booked when a cinema visit took us to the area. While the restaurant is indeed a friendly place and they strive to make you welcome, the quality of the food does not match the service. We were disappointed and will not return.

Corrigan's Mayfair
Went with Mrs Nosher for lunch today and had a very pleasant time. The food was nice, and very reasonable on the special-offer basis, but the service was particularly good. As others have noticed, the portions are not large, but we left sated and impressed after our three courses for £23.50. Nice to see the restaurateur at his post, too, rather than in a TV studio.

Terrace Grill & Bar
For a restaurant of this calibre, we found the service a little haphazard when we dined the other night. But they were very friendly and the room is impressive, although it seemed to be lacking in atmosphere. The food (we had the 50%-off deal) was perfectly fine. A little taster of a "mushroom capuccino" was a nice touch - simple yet effective.

Curry Paradise
There are several Indian restaurants near Paradise (as it is now called, not Curry Paradise), but walking past the comparitively empty others into this ever packed place tells you something. It is reliably good and has built up a loyal clientele. It makes you wonder how its local rivals survive - just how many curries do the staff of the Royal Free eat in a week?

Market
Ate here for the first time a few days ago, and absolutlely loved it. Everything clicked - cool decor, pleasant and competent staff, a good buzz without being deafened or crowded, excellent food, reasonably priced and palatable house wine, and eventually a bill that was (a) modest and (b) picked up by our companions. A result all round!

Le Gavroche
Just returned from enjoying the excellent value lunch at £49 per head. A memorably brilliant experience that worked out cheaper than watching a nil-nil draw at the Arsenal. Fabulous.

St John's Tavern
We returned on Friday after a while away from here and found the food , service and atmosphere as good as before, if not even better. A class act for a gastropub.

Agra Restaurant
What do Roy Orbison and Muhammad Ali have in common? One answer is they have both frequented the Agra near Warren Street tube (not really Soho at all, as the website has it). And they were right to do so. The tandoori dishes are particularly good, and it is an excellent Indian overall with a wide range of regular customers. The wine list could do with a freshen up, but otherwise this is a knockout.

Agra Restaurant
What have Muhammad Ali and Roy Orbison got in common? They have both patronised this deservedly long-standing Indian restaurant that isn't in Soho at all. It is just behind Warren Street. Had an excellent meal there recently, as usual, with the tandoori-based dishes being outstanding. Intersting mixed clientele too; some medics, some commuters getting the late train, and some miscellaneous drunks.

Almeida
Four of us reently took advantage of their early-evening offer, booked online, of two courses for £14.50. Naturally, the bill increased as we added bottled water and wine, but it still came out as terrific value for money. This is an attractive space in which to dine, and the service was first class, despite our cheapskate status. Perfect for pre-theatre or cinema in islington. We will be back.

Fig Bistro
Our group dined at Fig recently and - while we felt that the place was pleasant enough, the people running it were equally nice and the food was pretty good - we did have minor reservations. A couple of dishes were felt to be underseasoned, and the portions were ungenerous. The wine list also lacked options at the more readily affordable end. But, on balance, something of an oasis in a desert.
