We have just returned from having lunch at Skylon - 7 of us in total, 2 of which were children of 9 and 12.
We were spending the day in London, firstly on the London Eye and then some lunch for a family birthday celebration. I had looked up reviews for the restaurant and was disappointed to read that the reviews were mixed and many were fairly terrible. I wasn't really looking forward to eating there but bit my tongue and hoped for the best.
We had a table booked at The Grill as we had decided it would be more child friendly. We arrived at lunchtime and there were a few tables of families already there. We were shown to the bar and had drinks overlooking the river before being shown to our table. The children were excited as they thought the restaurant looked 'posh' and didn't smell like Ikea. They loved the decor which kept them amused whilst waiting for their lunch. It also helped that my son could wander around in the stairwells looking in and waving at everyone.
Without going into the meal in fine detail, I can tell you that the food was delicious as was the wine, the kids even finished all their food. The service was brilliant - not too fast and certainly not slow. We felt very well looked after and all the service was with a smile. It wasn't cheap - £350!! but we had a memorable family day out. Also, by the time we left, the restaurant was packed with many families enjoying Sunday lunch together.
I had to review this restaurant as it was so much better than the reviews that I had read prior to our visit and felt that it didn't deserve such bad press.
The whole family had such a great time on the South Bank that I feel sure that we will return soon and dine once again at Skylon.
