Lye Torng Thai Restaurant & Bar

I live near this restaurant. The bargain lunch menu is served until 5pm. My favourite dish on this menu is the prawn Penang dry curry (not actually dry, quite moist in fact!) On the main menu served all day and evening my favourite is the beef Massaman curry which looks rather dull but is in fact quite delicious, with excellent tender chunks of beef in a superb sauce. Their pad thai is worth travelling for too. I have been coming here for years and would recommend it.

I was taken by a friend when they were doing a two for one offer on afternoon tea. it was a Friday, and we decided to have the £24 champagne tea. This involved a glass of champagne to start. We then chose our teas which were brought in cute little pots. They brought a three layer cake dish. On the bottom there were masses of absolutely fresh brown and white assorted sandwiches, cucumber, egg mayonnaise, tomato and coronation chicken. On the top layer there were four freshly made warm scones with clotted cream and home made jam. We only managed one of these. On the middle layer, there were a couple of mince pies, some chocolate pots, some slices of home made almond cake and a very good home made carrot cake.

Apart from an initial mistake on the bill, charging us the full price, which was quickly corrected, we decided that this was the bargain of the year, with service the bill was £27 for two. During the day there are super views of the Borough Market downstairs which makes it even more fun. Unfortunately they only do afternoon tea from Monday to Friday. Without the champagne, this is still only £15 a head, which is much cheaper than a lot of other places.

I had been meaning to try this place for a long time. My son took me there for my birthday last week.

There were four of us and we all started with an excellent potted crab. Two of us then shared a roast pheasant and two had an excellent lamb dish, all of which were very good indeed.

Only two of us had desserts: I had some gingerbread ice cream, excellent and my son had the famous French toast with plum sauce and ice cream. We all tasted both desserts, and the French toast was an absolute winner.

This really is a very good friendly restaurant, and we had a very good time and would return again.

I have passed this little place several times on a bus, and after reading these reviews decided to try it. I have now been there twice, and find it pays to book. The wine list is a bit pricey but the house wine is fine, particularly the red. We asked for tap water last time and were brought full glasses of water with ice and lemon AND a large jug of same, which impressed us. It is a small, friendly, old fashioned place with a larger, smarter room upstairs. I like it downstairs because you can watch people come and go, many of whom are obviously regulars. I had egg mayonnaise, a good old fashioned starter, with a little edging of finely sliced tomatoes and cucumber. My friends had the parma ham with melon, (plenty of ham, too), and the mixed meat antipasti with olives and pate, which turned out to be absolutely huge. Two of us had the garlic prawns with a delicious sauce and rice for mains, and my other friend had the seafood pasta with a tomato sauce which was absolutely full of large prawns, mussels etc. They brought finger bowls after this, and the helpings were so large that we could not manage any pudding, though these looked delicious. I shall be returning with more friends next week.
