Alas, this rather charming place has now closed, after several decades of serving surprisingly good English food.

Brasserie St. Jacques

Lovely place this. It's where Petrus used to be and benefits from the architectural echoes. Really good French staples: snails, fois-gras, steaks, game birds, tarte tatin, etc. The wine list can be a bit pricey, but seek out the Languedoc section for some more reasonably-priced, less-trendy and, in my opinion, superior reds.

About Thyme

I'm always pleasantly surprised by this place (I donít know why I consistently expect it to deliver less than it actually does). On the basis of half a dozen visits over the last 3 years, I would certainly recommend this place if you find yourself in Pimlico/Victoria. Pleasant staff and good food. The calve's liver in particular is excellent.

I do think it's a little overpriced, especially if you choose off the standard a la carte menu and wine list. But get there before 7pm and the pre-theatre menu offers a good choice at £18.50 for 2 courses and £23.50 for three and they're usually offering a wine special at a more reasonable price.

The Gilbert Scott

Had a decent business lunch here a week or so ago. The restaurant was half-full so there was plenty of space between diners (meaning we could talk business for a couple of hours without boring the pants off our Ďcouple on a special anniversaryí neighbours). The food was very good. My only modest criticism was that the snails to start were rather over-cooked and not particularly tasty; they were, though, presented very well, as indeed was everything else. Apart from my disappointing starter, the rest of the food for both of us was excellent. The flank steak in particular was really well executed. Service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing and we certainly weren't rushed. The room is lovely and, for what it is, I didn't think the prices too unreasonable either, particularly the wine list which contained some very drinkable bottles at austerity era prices.

The Goring Dining Room

Have used this place maybe 5 or 6 times for business lunches. A very traditional English dining room which serves good quality food. The dishes arenít stunning in their culinary creation but thatís not what you go to the Goring for. I donít find the place stuffy, but it certainly isnít casual.

Tables are set nicely apart so you can hold a business lunch without disturbing or being disturbed by your neighbours. Service has always been seamless when I have visited. And you might just be seated on the table next to Margaret Thatcher who lives round the corner (add or deduct points for this depending on your politics).

Great fish and chips place in Pimlico; near Victoria Station. Does what it does Ė erm, fish and chips - really well. The fish is very fresh and the staff is very friendly. Glad it's not the other way around. The grilled cod or grilled skate wing are both especially good if you fancy something a bit different but, equally, the standard battered haddock and chips washed down with a mug of tea is amongst the best in London.

Moti Mahal

Best curry house in central London by miles. Itís been there over 50 years and you can see why. Every meal weíve had has been excellent and the staff are lovely. Completely unrelated to the rather pretentious Moti Mahal in Covent Garden; this is the real deal.

Itís usually pretty busy but you can still often get a table without booking. Really close to South Kensington tube and the museums etc. Why there arenít a hundred reviews on here saying how great Moti is is quite beyond me. Whether youíre a hardened curry lover or just a tourist looking to try it for the first time, I canít recommend this place highly enough.

La Ratatouille

A real shame, but this place shut down in August 2012. It was an excellent French brasserie - great food, lovely staff. It only closed because the landlords decided to redevelop the block it was in.

I really hope they will find somewhere else to move to an re-open, but since it's been 5 months already since they closed perhaps they have decided not to bother.

As a fan of rotisseries I was eager to try this new venture, apparently soon to be a chain across London. So six of us tried it the other day.

The chicken is good and the chips are excellent. The house red wine too is quaffable and not too pricey at £15. We didn't try the desserts.

Actually my friends and I would probably be visiting Clockjack quite often if it wasn't for what we all thought was a bizarre oversight: no gravy. Dipping sauces are all well and good, but roast chicken without gravy? Really? Actually, the lack of gravy is the only reason we won't be returning, whereas we will be going back to Tramshed and - for a rotisserie experience just down the road from Clockjack - Randall & Aubin, both of which understand that chicken without the option of gravy is just plain weird !

La Poule au Pot

Love this place. Superb French country quisine, and even if the 'Frenchness' of the place is so overstated it feels like you've walked onto the set of 'Allo 'Allo, every meal here has been a delight. Have always found the staff to be genial and helpful, perhaps even too much so for that genuine French restaurant experience...

La Boheme

Everything here was distinctly average. The service was pleasant enough, just a long way from what you might call polished. The food was a little disappointing and, although it was 8pm on a Saturday in Covent Garden, the place was empty and so lacked any atmosphere. One particular gripe was that despite service being included in the bill the chip-and-pin machine was handed to me with the request to enter an additional gratuity.

I visited this place about 4 years ago and had good memories of it, but this recent visit will be my last.

The food and service here are fine, but my bill (for 2 people) was as follows:

£35.00 for 2 mains

£22.00 for a bottle of wine

£7.13 for the 12.5% service

£3.90 "cover charge"

£0.49 for 12.5% service on the cover charge!

So basically £57 for the meal and £11.52 for service. Does this place (or indeed anywhere) warrant a 20% service charge? No. In these days of included gratuities I find it outrageous restaurants have the nerve to add a non-optional cover charge.

So my advice: until Rowley's scraps its cover charge, go to 'Old Express' in Shepherd Market: it's the same menu but significantly less of a rip-off.

Fino's Wine Cellar (Mount St)

A gem of a place just off Berkeley Square. Friendly italian staff make the place so unstuffy and informal that the great food comes almost as a surpise. Highly recommended.
