Nyonya is a difficult one, inhabiting a brilliant location just off Notting Hill Gate that bustles with life until the early hours it should be the perfect location for a Restaurant with wrap around views, but as the previous Italian Restaurant found when it closed, a great view doesn't guarantee the success of an establishment.

Because of the resteraunt's lack of space there is a very real sense of being involved, and it does bustle with a pleasant atmosphere, although the condensation on the windows on a cold day can be a tad off-putting! The staff a generally friendly, if a little disorganised, and the food is generally good with one or two exceptions, some of the sauces are occassionally greasy and a little palid, I'm not sure if this is due to a different shift of kitchen staff, but it really can let the place down.

Having said all that it's not a bad place, neither expensive or stuffy it's good for a quick lunch, but I'd think twice with the local variety of establishments about Dinner at Nyonya.

Costa's Grill

In today's Notting Hill Costa's Grill is looking and feeling tired, it could be wonderful nestled in-between the pastel coloured houses of Hillgate village, but instead it delivers an experience that many won't have seen since the 70s. A tired menu full of Greek stock staples, all of which on the occasion I went with friends were served without care or attention to ingredients or presentation.

The food had no soul, but then neither did the staff who were slow to take orders, too quick to deliver food and to slow to bring the bill, leaving you with the odd impression while eating that they were keen to turn covers, but at all other times in the (mainly empty) restaurant that you might never be able to get out.

In comparison to other Notting Hill establishments the wine list, food, decor and staff are all poor. I won't be going back, especially not with two stunning restaurants virtually opposite Costa's and a vast array more just around the corner on Notting Hill Gate. It's seen it's glory days; it now needs to capture them again or die.
