Tea Box

I don't know what happened to those folks who slammed this place, but my husband and I are quite happy with it. We've been there a couple of times now and every time, the service was excellent, as were the teas. We only ordered something to nibble whilst sipping tea, so cannot comment on the lunch menu. It's a lovely little place that we hope to frequent often. I only wish it would stay open longer hours!

The Humming Bird

The two of us went to Jerkmaica after reading all the reviews here. Sadly, the restaurant did not live up to the expectation. I am fine with small, hole-in-the-wall kind of places as long as the food is good. It wasn't. We ordered the sprats and peppered shrimp of which the sprats were decent, but the shrimp just tasted like they had been microwaved in a bottle of Jamaican sauce from Tesco. (And I suspect that's exactly what it is.) The mains were not impressive either. One of us had red fish, which was clearly not fresh. Goat curry was nothing to write home about either. If you look at the website, you expect a slightly classy place, but this is not. Most of the other customers were chavs who looked like they were having a good time. If you're not comfortable with that, stay away. I must say the hostess was very pleasant, though.

I had eaten good Ethiopian food before, so kind of knew what to expect. In that regard, Merkato did not disappoint. Between the two of us, we ordered fried spicy injera for starters, lamb and chicken curry for mains and Tej honey wine. The food was excellent all the way. I absolutely loved the honey wine - it's a must try! My partner and I both found the injera a tad too sour, but I guess it depends on individual tastes. The hostess was very sweet and friendly. We will go back if we're in the mood for some Ethiopian. It's a fairly small and cosy place with a traditional decor. And oh, the whole meal cost us around 40 pounds. All in all, a good experience.

We went to this restaurant on a Friday night after reading some good reviews. Upon entering, we realized that we were the only customers, which made us doubt the place. All our fears were unfounded, however. First the decor - pleasant, warm and "orangey". The hosts were very gracious and helpful when we were deciding what to eat. We ordered chicken wings and crispy fried minnows for starters and we both absolutely loved them. Especially the minnows. I also had sorrel wine which was absolutely divine. If, like me, you like fruity wines, then go for it. For the mains, we got the jerk chicken and curry chicken. I loved the curry chicken, while my partner loved the jerk chicken. And I mean really loved it! The bill with all that and another drink came to around 40. There is no doubt we'll be going back again. I only hope that that Friday was the exception as far as the crowd is concerned, and the place manages to stay open. It would be a shame if it were to go away.
