Sushi Hiro

It was such a relief to find Sushi Hiro. Who cares about decor. We want SUSHI.

What makes the difference is the rice. Sushi restaurants outside Japan tend to think, slap on a fresh piece of fish on vinegared rice - and that should do. I hear quite often "oh, the fish was so fresh!" of course the fish has to be fresh. That's taken for granted. It's the RICE that makes it or breaks it. Sushi Hiro has the right rice, and the correct proportion (rice bit tends to be too big in sushi catered for Westerners). Make sure your Nigiri is done by the boss there though. His underlings are not quite up to scratch.

Racine

I must congratulate this restaurant if only for my own satisfaction. Having come from Japan, I always found western cuisine a bit too fussed over, a bit too heavy with not enough concern for the texture of fresh ingredients. Racine didn't disappoint me with it's attention to detail and was delighted to find the sauce light and subtle. I was so surprised the first time I went there, I went back to make sure it wasn't a one-off. It wasn't. I will happily go back there ignoring any invitation to 2* or 3* restaurants. Breath of fresh air to find out that it's possible to have an amazing dining experience at a reasonable price (for London that is).

The Waterside Inn

Restaurant setting was beautiful. Food and service was absolutely as you expect from a restaurant of this standing but nothing so special that it really stuck to my memory. I have been to many other restaurants in London not as expensive serving better food.
