The Regency Restaurant

We have visited this restaurant many times (previously on visits to Brighton) and now we live here if we have people to stay, as everyone wants fish and chips at the seaside.

I wouldn't say it's the best fish and chips in Brighton but it is very good, the portions are ok sized (I would prefer to see different size options as you get in Bardsleys) but for the price you pay it's exceptionally good value.

It is very child-friendly which is handy if you have family/friends with children visiting.

Service tends to be fast but friendly - if you want an evening of fine dining over numerous courses this isn't for you, but if you want good fish and chips in an authentic restaurant in a great location, then you can't got wrong with The Regency.

Rasa

We were on the look out for a good Indian restaurant in Brighton and were recommended this by friends. Rasa is a South Indian restaurant, so the menu will be different to what you might get in a standard Indian but for me, this really makes it stand out from the norm.

The pre-meal snacks were tasty and more than sufficient as a starter - we'd been told the main courses were large so we skipped the starters. All 4 vegetarian curries sounded good and I opted for the Cheera Parippu Curry (which was a steal at £5) and my husband had the Masala Dosa. We also ordered rice, chickpeas and the Malabar Paratha - in fact once we saw the size of the Dosa we'd probably ordered too much food!

All the dishes were exceptionally tasty and washed down with a couple of large Cobras, the bill was under a very reasonable £40.

The staff were all very friendly and the overall service was very good.

Definitely my favourite Indian restaurant in Brighton.

The George

I absolutely adore this place and love the fact that it's 10 minutes walk from where we live.

Being new to the area I was google searching for pubs with good vegetarian food and couldn't believe that there was a pub (on our doorstep) that just served vegetarian food.

In 4 months we have sampled most things on the menu and they have all been excellent - my husband is a big fan of the burritos and veggie burgers while I highly recommend the (huge!) Ploughmans or veggie sausage sandwich.

The costs are very reasonable for pub food and they do a great selection of ales. There's a secluded little courtyard at the back which has been perfect for summer and the pub has a really cosy feel for winter. The staff are always super friendly and helpful too.

Definitely my favourite pub in Brighton!

Moshi Moshi Sushi

Despite visiting Brighton regularly for many years, I didn't know about Moshi Moshi until we moved to Brighton just a few months ago as it is slightly hidden off the beaten track in Bartholomew Square.

We ordered a selection of small dishes, a hot dish and vegetarian sushi set and the price was very reasonable for the quality of the food. I also loved that you could get draft Asahi.

I know some previous reviews had criticised the service but we found it to be excellent - helpful but not overbearing on an Saturday evening.

Highly recommend for Japanese food in Brighton.

Al Duomo

We turned up on a Saturday evening without a booking after walking out of Alfresco (see review on Alfresco). We asked to sit outside to make the most of the last of the sunshine and the waiter quickly accomodated us with an outside table.

From the moment we arrived the service and attitude of the staff couldn't have been more helpful and different to what we had encountered at Alfresco. Wine and water was quickly brought out, we have recently moved to Brighton so had a couple of questions on the menu which they helpfully answered.

We shared a starter, a main each (really good pasta and 'proper' pizza), a bottle of wine, water and (excellent) service and the bill was well under under £40.

I can't wait to visit again, it is everything an Italian restaurant should be.

Alfresco

Avoid at all costs - the rudest staff I have ever encountered in a restaurant.

We had booked a table the previous Monday for an early dinner on the Saturday. Upon arriving at the restaurant, there was a sign outside which stated that the restaurant was closed for a private function - my husband had left a contact number when he made the booking and we hadn't been notified of any change to our booking, so we made our way into the restaurant.

A male waiter came up to us and aggressively told us to 'get out'. We explained that we had a reservation for 6pm and he told us to 'get out and wait outside'. A few moments later, another male waiter came out and said aggressively 'what do you want?' Again we explained we had a table reserved for 6pm, at which point he asked what name, when we stated our name, he rolled his eyes and acted as if we were putting him out. He then disappeared again, at which point my husband and I looked at each other, and both commented on how unbelievably rude both members of staff were. The second waiter came back and finally said that he did have a table for us (which we knew as we'd made the booking just a few days prior), however because of their awful attitude my husband said 'I think the way you've spoken to my wife and myself is unbelievably rude and if this is an indication of the service we are going to receive then I'm having second thoughts about eating here.' To this the waiter responded aggressively 'I've been working all day' as if that was an excuse for his rude, aggressive attitude.

There was no way we were going to give any money to this establishment so we left and went to Al Duomo by the Pavillion and had an excellent meal (at a fraction of the price we would have paid at Alfresco) and the service couldn't have been more exemplary.

Incidentally I did e-mail the restaurant afterwards to complain about the attitude of their staff and they haven't even bothered to write a reply, which is pretty indicative of how they value their customers!

Notting Grill

I'm really surprised by the negative reviews on Notting Grill. I have eaten here once before quite a few years ago and eaten at his sister's restaurnat Kew Grill quite a few times.

I am a vegetarian so this wouldn't be my first choice of restaurant but my husband like a bit of meat now and again so I was being the good wife and taking him there.

We were seated upstairs (when I came before I sat downstairs and didn't realise there was an upstairs) - the restaurant has a lovely cosy feel to it and the service was exemplary and I couldn't fault any of the staff at all.

We both had starters (goats cheese for me, crab for my husband) and he had steak for his main whilst I had the fishcakes. We also ordered side orders of creamy mash and the most fantastic chunky chips, plus mixed veg.

Along with a bottle of wine and water and service the bill came to under £100. We would have liked to have puddings but were simply stuffed for anything else!!

I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a good meal in lovely cosy surroundings, be warned if you are a vegetarian the main course selection is quite limited but all the meat eaters I know rave on about the place!!

The White Swan

We wanted to find a decent pub in Richmond for Sunday lunch with a group of friends and found the White Swan after a search online. The man taking the bookings couldn't have been more helpful as we had to increase our initial table size by a couple of people but managed to squeeze us in at short notice. The pub is located just off Richmond Green and is much larger than it looks with a lovely conservatory (where we were sitted) and a decent size outside area.

2 of our party were running late but the waitresses couldn't have been more helpful and attentive and were in no rush to get us served so they could have the table.

Between us we had a range of main courses - beef roasts, lamb roasts, tagliatelle and stuffed peppers. Everyone said their meals were of a very high standard and my stuffed peppers were very good - if I had to have any criticism of the menu I would have liked to see a veggie roast on the Sunday menu as I like all the roast trimmings but with a veggie option.

5 of us had puddings which were huge portions and all very tasty.

After a long leisurely afternoon in the pub and consuming a LOT of drinks, the bill was a very reasonable £25ish a head including service.

Would defininitely recommend if you're in the area.

Hare and Tortoise (Ealing)

The interior is pretty simple (think a bit Wagamanas) but the food is fantastic - and dirt cheap!!

4 of us had a selection of starters and sushi, we all had mains and 3 people had puddings, plus wine, beer and tea and it came to £75 including service. Couldn't fault this restaurant at all and will become a new regular haunt.

J Sheekey

We went to J Sheekey on Saturday night for our wedding anniversary as it is my favourite restaurant in London. I'd read some of the more recent reviews and was worried it might have gone downhill but I enjoyed it as much as ever.

We had a table from 8pm - 10.30pm so didn't feel rushed in the slightest. I had the shrimps and toast to start and my husband had the crab pate and toast - both were absolutely divine. Then as it's J Sheekey ir's rude not to have the best fish, chips and mushy peas there is and yet again these didn't disappoint. By this stage I couldn't manage pudding but my husband had the plum tart and amaretto icecream. We finished off with teas (him) and an Amarette (me).

Yet again a 10/10 for J Sheekey .

Dim T (Charlotte St)

I used to work close to Charlotte Street and this was often my tried and tested Friday lunchtime restaurant of choice and I've never been disappointed.

We normally shared starters (the prawn toast, dim sum) and then created our main dishes off the menu. The bill was never more than £12 or so a head, including drinks.

Based on our positive lunchtime experiences we arranged a group dinner for 10 of us one evening and were seated upstairs (I hadn't even realised there was an upstairs until then) which had very nice decor. All 10 diners were very impressed with the quality of the food and how reasonable it was.

Spiga

Spiga is my new favourite pizza restaurant in London. We walked in off the street on a Thursday evening and got a table. We were both starving so ordered the pizza garlic bread to start while we chose our pizzas. The garlic bread is essentially the size of another pizza!! I had the 4 cheese pizza which was fantastic. For 2 pizzas, the garlic bread, a bottle of wine, water and service the bill was a reasonable £50.

The Devonshire by Gordon Ramsay

The Devonshire is a really great addition to the Chiswick restaurant scene. The food was fantastic and the service second to none, also we found it to be very reasonable - £80 for the 2 of us having 3 courses each, wine and service, so cheaper than a lot of other 'gastropubs' we've visited.

Annie's (Chiswick)

I have only just discovered Annie's and what a hidden gem it is. The restaurant has a real cosey homely feel (I likened it to Charlotte's Place in Ealing where we frequently visit) and the service was excellent.

The portions are very generous. I had the asparagus starter from the special menu and my husband had the thai fishcakes and both were excellent. I was torn between the fish pie and the fish, chips and mushie pies and in the end opted for the fish pie, and then helped myself to some of my husband's fish and chips!! Again both our mains were excellent - we felt completely stuffed by this point but the puddings looked so good that after a breather we ordered 2, finally leaving feeling we wouldn't need to eat for 24 hours!! Including wine and service the bill was about £80 which was very reasonable for the amount and quality of the food.

I wish I'd discovered Annie's sooner but will definitely be returning.

Nobu

My husband took me to Nobu for my birthday and it was without doubt the best eating experience of my life.

The restaurant is very sleek and minimalistic and the staff couldn't be more helpful and attentive. We chose the tasting menu at £70 each as we wanted to sample as many things as possible and each course seemed to be more heavenly than the previous.

It's not cheap (our total bill was £250 but this included cocktails at the bar before), also be warned they have a hefty 15% service charge. But apart from that my whole experience of Nobu was a positive one.

Blue Elephant

We visited Blue Elephant for the first time last month after wanting to visit for a while. The interior is absolutely gorgeous, you really feel like you've walked off Fulham Broadway into a Thai oasis. The service is second to none..

We started off with cocktails in the bar where the waitresses brought us complimentary snacks and then headed into the restaurant. We were tempted to order the set menu but seeing the amount of food brought for other people didn't know if it would be too much!!

Instead we ordered a selection of starters - fish cakes, scallops in seashells (which were heavenly) and vegetarian spring rolls.

My scallops farang was excellent as a main and my husband really enjoyed his chicken curry. The restaurant was heaving (it was a Saturday night) but our waiters were polite and efficient. We also felt that there was no pressure on us to rush so they could free up the table and we ended up being sat in the restaurant for over 3 hours.

Overall a fantastic experience, our bill came to £130 (but that included our cocktails in the bar) and I can't wait to return.

Blah Blah Blah

I adore this restaurant and visit whenever I can persuade / bribe my meat eating husband to take me there.

The restaurant has a really quirky interior and the menu changes every 6 weeks or so. Everytime I have visited I could literally have eaten everything on the menu and everything I've ordered has been fantastic. Even my husband begrudgingly admits the food is very good.

Ealing Park Tavern

This is a good restaurant but we visit there less often than we generally would as I'm a vegetarian and the vegetarian choice is very limited.

The food is always excellent though and the restaurant always has a nice buzzy atmosphere about it.

Would visit more regularly esp if they start offering a vegetarian roast on the Sunday menu!!

The Grange Pub and Dining Room

The Grange is a lovely pub overlooking Ealing Common, comfy sofas inside and a great beer garden.

As other reviewers have said the Baked Camembert is heavenly. I've also always enjoyed the pasta dishes on menu. The roasts look very good but they don't offer a vegetarian option so I've never been able to try one out. I'm not really a sweet person but my husband assures me the puddings are fantastic.

The Walpole

What a fantastic restaurant. It's only open as a restaurant on a Friday and Saturday night (I've not tried their breakfasts yet) so early booking is necessary.

The menu is quite limited (normally about 5 choices of starter/main) but you get a feeling that the manageress and the chef who is her husband care passionately about the food. The portions are HUGE so I'd advise you to make sure you haven't eaten for a good few hours before you visit and don't get too carried away eating the freshly baked bread like we normally do!! If you can't finish your portions they'll give you a doggy bag so our 2 dogs have often had a Friday night treat of the Walpole's finest steak.

La Siesta

We often take friends to this restaurant as it's a favourite if there's a group of us.

The tapas is reasonably priced and I've never had any complaints with any of my choices - there is a good vegetarian selection. I find the service and atmosphere second to none.

Charlotte's Place

I love this restaurant and living in Ealing we visit it regularly.

The early Saturday night offer is worth checking out - 3 courses (from the full a la carte menu) plus a cocktail/glass of wine for £25 if you arrive before 7.

The menu changes monthly with new dishes being added and some core ones remaining. my only criticism would be that the vegetarian options are sometimes a bit limited.

It's also worth visiting on a Sunday for the fantastic Sunday lunch menu.
