Huong Viet

Recent lunch here was excellent - the food was fresh and interesting, and a good deal better than any of its Shoreditch competitors apart from the Viet Hoa. The service was fine, and the bill was unbelievably small. I've had problems in the past here with slightly chaotic service, but this meal reminded me just how good the Huong Viet can be.

Hakkasan

Had dim sum here recently and was extremely happy with both the food and the unobtrusive but attentive and friendly service. A large meal of dim sum, vegetable dishes, tea and a couple of superb cocktails each worked out at under £35 a head - not cheap compared to Chinatown, but really excellent quality in a beautiful setting for a special occasion. Obviously you can spend a lot more if you eat a la carte, but I've never spent more than this and often less.

Canteen at RFH

Took two friends here recently as a thank-you present. The food was decent, not cheap but good quality, but the service was so stupendously awful I'd be very reluctant to come back. The staff were not busy, but it was almost impossible to attract their attention. At one point around five staff were roaming around the room, not serving anybody else and ignoring us, while we tried to flag somebody down so as to place our order. Getting the bill was another ordeal, and took about a quarter of an hour.

It's a shame: the idea's great and the food is good, but something is obviously badly wrong with the management of the place.
