Bam-Bou

Beautiful and fun. Yes, it's not true Vietnamese, but this is a great example of many London joints inspired by various Eastern traditions that offer tasty interpretaions . Best dishes: belly of pork; spare ribs; har gau; tuna loin and the outstanding desserts: esp. banana and pistacio fritters, passion fruit tart. Great cocktails and decent wines, which they are happy to let you try. The point of this place, done up like a shophouse in Indochine, is a welcome, but not tacky, splash of theatre: imaginative decor in a historic house, and simmering, intimate atmosphere enjoyed by a smart but unpretentious crowd, from lovers to young families.

Ate here last night (Saturday) and had a quibble over service. Appreciated that they changed our allocated table when we arrived. You can't secure the great terrace or downstairs tables when booking, which personally I don't like, though I guess it's a democratic idea. An extra guest turned up for dinner, but we were told there was no way they could accommodate this - three of us remained -from what we could see there were plenty of spare tables. The two friends that departed were not impressed. Still, service was pleasant enough - maybe a little more thought over the reservations book would have secured them two more diners. However, we'll be back - it's that enjoyable. Prices are fair.
