Well, the reviews are certainly mixed on here and our experience on Sat, 29th July was an outstanding one. The pair of us, my husband and I, are not usually frequenting posh restaurants so this was a very special treat. I had the special offer and for £21.00 and it was excellent. The tomato galette was lovely but difficult to cut the pastry, which made me look even less elegant. The haddock was out of this world, and the elderberry jelly very refreshing. My husband had lamb shank with polenta from the a la carte menu, as he was unable to find anything edible on the special offer menu (to him, the Colonel is King ;-) but he enjoyed it thoroughly. He rounded it off with a treacle tart, which he loved too. This filled him up very easily.
Service was impeccable and I felt like a queen when the waiter removed the breadcrumbs with the back of a knife and a saucer.
This place is definitely worth a try and did not disappoint one bit. The only downside are the add-ons: Drinks cost a lot of money and the coffee @ £4.00 is very cheeky in my book. Having said that, they came with exquisite chocolates.
We came away having spent £83 (ouch) but I still believe it was worth it as a one off for peasants like us.
Presentation was good, so I suppose you kind of pay for that as well.
I was impressed and would certainly recommend the Boxwood Cafe.
